The Spoken Word: Words Fitly Spoken

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

Proverbs 25:11

Newlyweds Sean and Beca Thompson were having trouble adjusting to the pressures of marriage. Whenever they disagreed, they raised their voices, which led to yelling and name-calling. Their words hurt one another and badly damaged their marriage.

We need to realize the destructive power of the tongue, but we also need to grasp its power for good. Do you speak tenderly with your loved one? Do you express affection? Do you compliment and edify? Are your words fitly spoken?

The word fitly is an interesting term in Hebrew, the original language of the book of Proverbs. It’s the only time this word occurs in the entire Old Testament, and experts suggest two different meanings. The first involves the idea of timing—a word spoken at the right time, or a well-timed word. Other experts think this Hebrew term is related to the idea of a wheel, such as a potter’s wheel. The idea would be a well-turned word.

Both ideas are important. We need to say the right words, and we need to say them at the right time. Ask God for wisdom, and may your words be “fitly spoken” today.
