Who Needs Your Peace

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

IT WAS 1974 and I was getting on an airplane for the very first time. I wasn’t going on a short trip or quick vacation to a neighboring state. I was traveling from Bristol, Rhode Island, to Tulsa, Oklahoma—a city and state I had never even visited—to start my freshman year of college. Truthfully, I wasn’t even sure where the university was in relation to the airport. But I had two suitcases, my ticket, and fifty dollars in the bank; and I was following the Lord’s direction.

A relative had driven me and my parents to Boston Logan Airport. In those days, anyone could walk up to the gate. I watched my parents standing at the plate glass window as the plane pulled away. They were waving, and I was pretty sure my mom was crying. But I was off on a great adventure that would change the course of my whole life. And I had peace.

When I think about it even to this day, I don’t know how I did it. How had I gotten on that plane? How had I decided to leave everything familiar and travel over fifteen hundred miles to a place unknown? After all, I had suffered from anxiety since childhood. But the peace of God just came over me, and I got on the plane, found my seat, and landed in Tulsa a few hours later for the start of an amazing life journey.

You know, sometimes we experience a peace that baffles the understanding. It doesn’t make sense to anyone else. Have you ever experienced this? Maybe someone you love was in the hospital or received a difficult diagnosis, yet you trusted God’s care. Maybe you were moving across country, but trusted that God was leading you. Maybe you were switching careers, but despite the unknown, you felt calm about the change.

Sometimes peace comes and confounds the wisdom of man. In other seasons, peace seems so elusive, and you are up at night praying and crying out to God for answers and help. Whichever situation you are in tonight, we ask that you invite Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to come and blanket your heart and home with His comfort and rest.

Momma, tonight we pray for you, that in times of great turmoil or great decisions, the peace of our Lord would wash over your heart and mind. Just as Jesus spoke over His disciples, we believe He is speaking to you. He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” Whatever is troubling you, we pray that your heart would be still and filled with the peace that only He can bring.

Tonight we pray for the momma who needs Your peace. Lord, so much in her life feels unsettled, and the world seems like such a turbulent place right now. So many things are outside her control. She asks for peace in her own heart and mind. She asks for Your peace to blanket her heart and home. Lord, we ask that You meet her right where she is, wherever that may be, and fill her heart with the peace that passes all understanding.

We ask in Jesus’s name, amen.
