Who Needs To Know That Something Good Is Coming

Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

AS WOMEN AND MOTHERS, we are well acquainted with seasons of waiting. Whether we carry our babies in our hearts or bodies, we wait for our children to be born. We wait through the birthing process, the adoption process, or the transition from fostering to adoption. We wait and watch as our children grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man (see Luke 2:52). We wait and wait some more. Sometimes, we wait with bated breath to see how God will unfold their stories . . . and our own.

The Bible is full of stories in which men and women just like us waited on God. For instance, the Israelites waited to be freed from the power of the Egyptians, and in God’s perfect timing, they were set free. God’s people waited to be loosed from their captivity in Babylon, and at the perfect moment, they returned to worship their God again in the Promised Land. All of creation waited for the Savior to come, and at the appointed hour, Jesus was born. Once He had come, died, and risen again, Jesus told His friends to go to Jerusalem and wait for the gift of His Spirit. And then before Jesus returned to heaven, He said He was going to prepare a place for us and instructed us to wait for His return.

Waiting for God to do what He promised can feel hard, but it can also lead to worship as we trust the Lord who always provides. Waiting can be worship when we don’t fall into the trap of hopelessness but hold on to the belief that He will come through for us. Waiting can be worship when we turn our hearts toward the One who gives all good gifts and works everything out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes (see Romans 8:28).

But for our hearts to worship, we must remember this truth in our waiting: Something good is coming. Something good was coming to the nation of Israel through their freedom from the Egyptians. Something good was coming to all nations as creation waited for King Jesus to be born. Something good was coming when Jesus told His friends to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of His Spirit. Something good is still to come as we wait for Jesus’s return.

We often feel the heartache and hopelessness of the in-between—the place where we are and what we hope comes next—but God sees the full plan. He knows what is coming for each of us, and we can trust that His Word is true when He declares it is a good plan. We can trust that hope is coming, peace is coming, stress is leaving. Answers will be found, joy will rise, and discouragement will go. Here is some hope to hold on to tonight, my friend: God isn’t stalling; He’s preparing. And what He is preparing will be very, very good. Something good is coming.

Tonight we pray for the momma who needs to know that something good is coming. Lord, she needs hope. She needs to believe that when she wakes up tomorrow something unexpected and exciting could happen. When it all feels the same day after day, Your Word says You have a good plan for her. So tonight we pray that hope rises in her heart. We pray for her discouragement and stress to lift. We pray for peace to come. And we pray that when she goes to sleep tonight, she believes that tomorrow could be different in the best possible way.
