A Prayer for a Son or Daughter Who Is Single

We come to You so grateful

To watch our child

Grow into the person

You’ve created them to be.

We come to You in awe

As we see them embrace life.

We come to You with joy

As we watch their personality emerge

And see the gifts You’ve given them

Break through to our weary world.

We come to You to give thanks

For exactly who they are,

Right at this very moment.

May they feel the warmth and welcome

Of community inside the church

And inside our family.

May they know that their value and their worth

Does not rest in a relationship status

Amid a culture where relationships

Can often be idols.

We come to You asking for a spirit of listening

For the songs You’ve placed

In the hearts of our grown child.

Help us not to assume,

To let go of unspoken expectations,

And to honor their journey

As we watch them fly the nest

And make their own way.

We come to You asking for healing

Where yesterday’s hurt lingers in their heart.

We ask for hope to fill their every tomorrow.

And we pray that wherever

Their journey with You takes them,

That they will be attentive and receptive

To Your formative work

In their heart and mind,

Body and soul.

We come to You with hearts full of gratitude

As we marvel at the wonder

Of seeing a child

Become their own person,

Reflecting Your light

In their joys and trials.

May they love You, O God,

And love their neighbor.

May they feel love in friendships

And in family relationships too.

May they know they are

Never on this journey

Alone.
