Nothing Ordinary

On that day HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the LORD’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar.

Zechariah 14:20

IN WORD Life in a fallen world is often divided into the sacred and the secular. For those who are redeemed, all of life becomes sacred, but it wasn’t always that way. From the earliest pages of God’s Word this distinction between holy and profane is present. God Himself spends a lot of time telling Israel how to be “holy”—set apart for His special use. Not only must His people be cleansed from the corruption of this world, so must the articles of their worship and sacrifice. Any earthly thing that is to be used for God must be drawn out of the context of fallenness and prepared specifically for His presence.

When the Lord returns, this separation process will be so thorough and final that even the trivial instruments of life—like bells on horses and daily cookware—will have been cleansed and prepared for His presence. Corruption will be so rooted out of creation that common articles in His Kingdom will be considered holy. The religious tendency to isolate oneself from the fallenness of the world will never be necessary again.

This is yet another day-of-the-Lord truth that believers are meant to bring into the present. We have the privilege of bringing common vessels—ourselves, our jobs, our families, our possessions, our finances, everything—under the lordship of Jesus, turning ordinary things into sacred offerings. We already know this is the direction of history. We should be inspired to go ahead and move in that direction.

IN DEED What common vessels have you submitted to God for sacred use? Which ones remain under your own lordship? Do not rest until every area of your life, no matter how trivial, is inscribed with His name. Above all, let the common vessel of your soul be completely, sacredly His.

God wills that you sanctify the world and your everyday life.
