God’s Wisdom

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

Romans 11:33

IN WORD The characteristics of our God aren’t very comforting if they aren’t backed by this one, are they? How would we feel about a sovereign but unwise God? He’d scare us to death. What would we think of a God who was good but not very careful in how He applied His goodness? He’d have our sympathies, but not our confidence. No, without wisdom, the rest of God doesn’t make us feel very safe.

But His wisdom! It means that He always knows what to do in every situation. It means His sovereignty can work out every detail of this life to result in something good and ultimately worthwhile. It means that as confused as we get as we walk through this life, there’s always Someone perfectly wise to turn to. We can have confidence in our God because our God knows everything. Not only that, He knows what everything means.

God’s wisdom is an often-invisible thread running throughout human history. All our provocative questions about the ancients, all our ideas about where history ends, and every mystery in between—these are simple matters to the all-wise God. And the best part of His wisdom is that He makes it accessible to us. The all-wise God chose us as His children.

IN DEED Have you ever thought of that? You were born into this world, suffered in a sinful condition, were redeemed by His mercy, and are called His child all because these things were right! He was not surprised; in fact, He knew all about you, your problems, and your plans before the foundation of this world. Before dinosaurs roamed, before horses were drawn on cave walls, before pyramids were built, you were seen. God knew every aspect of your current circumstances and put you into them anyway. Why? Because somehow He’s using them for good.

Are you frustrated? tired? confused? Acknowledge the wisdom of God. Trust in it. Ask for it. Realize that it stretches deeper and further than you can see.

As a blind man has no idea of colors, so have we no idea [how] the all-wise God perceives and understands all things.
