What Is Our Center?

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 1 Corinthians 15:3

“I am totally centered and focused on motherhood and my two children. I waited for years to have kids, and they are the most important things in my life,” one woman told me.

“I’m centered on my career; that’s what my life revolves around,” said another.

What are you centered on? What’s the most important thing in your life? Is it your ministry? your family? your job? your weight? your finances? The world offers no end of things that seem all-important to focus on. But Solomon, the one who had it all, said that the eye never stops desiring and the senses are never satisfied, that undertaking great projects, amassing wealth, and enjoying every pleasure and relationship will eventually prove meaningless (see Ecclesiastes 1:8–2:11).

The wisdom of Scripture says life isn’t measured by what we own (see Luke 12:15). God has given us life in his Son. If we center our lives on the things of this world, they will never satisfy our real longings. Without the salvation that Christ purchased in his sacrifice on the cross, we will always come up empty because he designed us for communion with him. He alone can fill our emptiness. Here is the central truth: Christ died for our sins and in him is new life, life abundant, life eternal. That’s worth centering our lives on. —CHERI

Christ Jesus, I want to keep you and your Cross at the center of my life. May nothing, no matter how good it is, become more important or distract me from pursuing a close, living relationship with you.

Every character has an inward spring; let Christ be that spring. Every action has a keynote; let Christ be that note to which your whole life is attuned.
