Searching For God

Searching for God

Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him.

Psalm 105:4

David was called a man after God’s heart because, in whatever situation he found himself, he searched for God. Psalm 105 tells us we are called not only to praise God, give thanks to him, proclaim his greatness, and let the whole world know what he has done but also to search for the Lord and his strength and to keep on searching. To search means to look carefully and thoroughly in an effort to discover or find something important. It doesn’t mean to look once and then go on to pursue other things. It means to search always for God, which in the original Hebrew has the sense of seeking wholeheartedly, continually, constantly, regularly, and daily. And as we search for the Lord, we are also seeking his strength rather than our own for all the challenges we face in living and being his followers.

It is encouraging to know that as we search for God, he comes and reveals himself to us and then manifests his strength in our lives. He promises that when we seek him, we will encounter him, because he does not hide his character from his people. Over and over throughout the Bible, through his Son, Jesus, through his Spirit, and through creation, he has revealed his heart, his glory, and his nature so that we might know him. God promises that those who devote themselves to searching for him and knowing him will find all their needs met in him (see Deuteronomy 4:29; Jeremiah 29:13; Acts 17:27-28). —CHERI

Lord, thank you for calling me again to search for you and for the many promises in your Word that you will come and strengthen me and reveal yourself so I can know you more intimately. Cause me to seek you with all my heart, to search for you daily and continually throughout my life, and to depend on your strength for today.

Our God loves to come; he wants to come forth in us, to rise up in us in all his beauty. —MARGARET THERKELSEN, AUTHOR AND SPEAKER
