God of Wonder

Praise the LORD! How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how fitting! The LORD is rebuilding Jerusalem and bringing the exiles back to Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension! Psalm 147:1-5

I love seeing the look on my grandchildren’s faces as they jump for joy over snowflakes twirling from the sky or delight in blowing a dandelion into the wind. Little children are aware and alive, full of wonder, amazement, and awe. And I find their wonder contagious. I believe that God must love it too.

Many of us adults, however, have lost our sense of wonder and awe. This is why we are given psalms such as this one, which describes God’s absolute power and creative miracles. These psalms draw us out of our ho-hum, busy existence, which takes such things as rainbows, snowflakes, and sunrises for granted, back to a childlike wonder of our great God, the God who fills the sky with clouds, gives his orders to the world, sends the snow like white wool, and hurls the hail like stones. Who created everything and possesses all power and yet cares for the weak and brokenhearted. Who counts the stars and calls each one by name but supports the humble. Who reigns over every nation and galaxy and yet delights in the simple, heartfelt devotion of those who trust him. He is a God whose understanding is beyond human comprehension. Surely a God like this can inspire our wonder and awe.

Let your heart be overwhelmed today with life’s little miracles and the great things the Lord has done for you. Be glad and rejoice in him. —CHERI

God of wonder, I lift my voice to sing praise to you. Your understanding is beyond comprehension! Your power is absolute. How good it is to sing praises to my God, how delightful and how right. I praise you, Lord.

Receive every day as a resurrection from death, as a new enjoyment of life. . . . Let your joyful heart praise and magnify so good and glorious a Creator.
