Flying With Faith

Flying with Faith

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. Psalm 139:16

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer and was in Nevada for treatment, the malignancy spread to the brain, and her condition worsened. At the same time, her only son’s first baby was born. The doctors told her she couldn’t fly because of brain swelling, but neither could she survive the drive to Texas. My mother had had an intense fear of flying, but she wanted more than anything to get back to see that precious grandson, all of her six children, and her twenty-two grandchildren and to worship at her church one more time.

When an elderly minister came to her hospital room that night, he read Psalm 139 aloud. When Mom heard him read verse 16, “Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed,” she knew she didn’t have to fear how many days she had left because even though she was in serious condition, her days were already written in God’s book. Those few words set her free to check herself out of the hospital, enjoy the most glorious flight of her life, hold that new grandbaby, and celebrate every day she had left on this earth as a gift from the God who had ordained each moment.

Through this experience I came to a renewed sense of God’s sovereignty, whether I’m on the ground, on a jumbo jet flying to Africa in a storm, or on a little prop plane flying over the snow-covered mountains of Wyoming. —CHERI

Lord, I praise you for your amazing sovereignty. I am awed to realize that you not only saw me before I was born but you had already recorded every day of my life. You charted the path ahead of me and laid out every moment of my life before a single day had passed. I don’t have to fear because you are with me, before me, behind me, surrounding me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me!

I was once on a mission plane. That is always such a wonderful experience! In a large plane you forget that you are up high in the air but in a small plane you see the ground beneath you, the sky around you, and you feel really dependent on the Lord’s protection. —BRUCE LARSON, AUTHOR, SPEAKER, AND FORMER PASTOR
