“Do You Trust Me?”

I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the LORD because he is good to me.

Psalm 13:5-6

Even though we know God loves us, trusting him for the outcome can still be tough when we are facing one of life’s fogs. I remember the story of a man who was hiking in the mountains. High above the valley, he slipped and fell. As he tumbled down over slippery granite, he managed to grab a sapling growing between two boulders.

“God, help me!” he called.

In answer, a voice from heaven said, “Do you trust me?”

“Yes, I trust you,” the frantic man said. “Help me!”

The voice came again. “Do you really trust me?”

This time, dangling in midair, the man pondered the question. Finally, he answered slowly, “Yes, I do trust you.”

Then he added the very human comment, “And if you’ll notice, I don’t have much of a choice in the matter.”

The heavenly voice spoke a third time. “Then if you trust me, let go.”

Let go? About this time, I’d want to have a little discussion with God. Was there a ledge just two inches below the man’s toes, but hidden from view? Would he drop onto the new path and have a wonderful story to tell about God’s faithfulness? Or was his heavenly Father lovingly saying, “It’s time. Come home to me”?

But that’s what trust means—letting go without the assurance of the ledge.

Lord, trust is a tough issue. We love saying, “Isn’t God good!” when wonderful things happen: healing occurs, the promotion comes through. But Lord, you are good all the time. Even when tears are running down our cheeks.

We can take the risk of throwing ourselves at the feet of Jesus. Knowing Him, we are sure He will not take advantage of us, humiliate us, or reject us. We can safely place our lives at His disposal. —MARGARET HESS, AUTHOR AND BIBLE TEACHER
