The Woman From Shunem

Read: 2 Kings 4:29-37

As she walked through the cavernous parking garage, Alana’s eyes strained to see her familiar blue Taurus. She never relished having to drive downtown for nighttime company meetings, especially now, when the news had been reporting recent attacks on women. Alana looked at the security guard walking beside her. She’d been embarrassed about his offer to walk her to her car, but now she was glad that he had insisted. Sure was nice to have company at a time like this.

The woman from Shunem had company as she returned to her home, where her son lay dead. She had gone to find Elisha, and when she reached him, she fell to the ground and grabbed his feet. When he learned that something was wrong with her son, Elisha sent his servant to lay his staff on the boy. That didn’t satisfy the grief-stricken mother. She vowed that she would not go home unless the prophet came with her. As the two made their way back to Shunem, the woman had no idea what would happen, but she had the comfort of having a person who could help her by her side.

When a crisis hits, our first instinct should be to run to God as the Shunemite woman ran to Elisha. We don’t need to grab his feet and beg for him to come with us. He’s already here, and he has promised to walk through every situation in our lives with us. After the Shunemite woman got home, Elisha prayed, and God restored her son to life. Although God doesn’t always change our circumstances the way we desire, something miraculous will happen. He will give us the strength and courage to face whatever comes our way, and he will change us in the process. Whether we’re dealing with a dark, scary night or the tragedy of death, Someone walks beside us every step of the way.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me.
