Eyewitnesses To Jesus’ Healing Power

Read: Matthew 15:29-31

The women present in today’s Bible passage enjoyed a celebration like none they had ever seen before. When Jesus sat down on a hill near the Sea of Galilee, an immense crowd gathered around him. The people had brought all their sick relatives, friends, and neighbors for Jesus to heal. For the next three days, Jesus healed every single person who needed his touch. Women in the crowd were overjoyed to be healed or to see their loved ones restored to health—blind people seeing, deaf people hearing, lame people walking, weak and suffering people now strong and healthy. The crowd praised God for these miracles.

When someone we love goes through a serious illness, we suffer, too. We desperately long for God’s healing touch. Although James 5:16 instructs us to pray for one another’s healing, God gives no guarantees. Sometimes he miraculously heals the sick, while at other times he chooses not to. Although he always has a reason for his actions, we can’t help asking “why” when God doesn’t heal us or our loved ones. God wants to know if we will keep trusting him when our prayers aren’t answered in the way that we want. Do we love him for his miraculous powers, or do we love him for who he is?

Regardless of whether God grants physical healing, he has already provided spiritual healing for all who will accept it. We were all born suffering from the deadly disease of sin. Jesus died so that we can escape everlasting punishment and separation from God. Instead of separation, God gives us the opportunity to spend eternity with him, enjoying perfect bodies free of aches, pains, and illness. In the meantime, even if disease destroys our bodies, sin has lost its power to destroy our souls.

They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.
