Time for Justice

Jezebel

Read: 2 Kings 9:30-37

As soon as Bobbie saw the patrol car, she jerked her foot off the accelerator. When she had passed the car, she breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness I have sharp eyes and quick reflexes. She smiled. I always see them in time to—uh-oh! She spotted flashing lights in her rearview mirror. As Bobbie pulled onto the shoulder, she knew that she couldn’t plead ignorance of the flashing sign and all the orange barrels she had passed. She would pay dearly for speeding in a work zone.

Queen Jezebel could not escape payback either. The prophet Elijah predicted that God would put her family to death for their evil reign, with Jezebel suffering an especially appalling end. When her husband died exactly as prophesied, her heart was so hardened that instead of repenting, she continued her tyranny over Israel. Ten years later, as her end drew near, she still showed no remorse. Instead, she painted her face and hurled sarcasm at the person God had sent to judge her. In spite of her power and her domineering personality, Jezebel was eaten by dogs, as prophesied.

Sometimes we convince ourselves that we’re getting away with something, when in reality, it’s just a matter of time before we get what’s coming to us. The longer we go without getting caught, the more flippant we become in our wrongdoing. In the same way, many of us ignore God. As time passes, our hearts become hardened, and we don’t think about what is ahead. The Bible says that each of us will face judgment after death. Those who know Christ will receive eternal life and its rewards; those who have rejected him will receive eternal punishment. Now is the time for us to choose which type of payback we prefer.

Each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment.
