Thirsty For The Truth
Thirsty for the Truth
The Woman At The Well
Read: John 4:11-15
Every time I read an article on good health habits, I resolve to drink more water. Some days, my only fluid intake is a cup of coffee for breakfast and a couple of soft drinks later in the day. Medical experts stress that drinking plenty of water is essential for good physical and mental health. Even slight dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness, impaired concentration, and other symptoms. Thirst is usually an accurate gauge of the need for fluids, but not always. In some cases, our bodies may be crying out for water without our realizing it.
When a Samaritan woman went to draw water from Jacob’s well, Jesus made a mysterious comment about water and thirst to draw her into a spiritual discussion. She had to make daily trips to and from the well, lugging her heavy clay jar. Jesus told her that people who drank the water he had would never be thirsty again. The woman was confused, but intrigued. How much easier her life would be if she didn’t have to draw water! But how could this man make such an incredible offer? The Samaritan woman began to understand that Jesus was talking about something deeper than physical thirst.
We may not realize it, but our souls thirst and hunger for the God who created us. We will never be satisfied until we fulfill that need by entering into a personal relationship with him. Even Christians can become spiritually dehydrated without realizing it. We can forget to take in God’s presence and his Word on a daily basis, resulting in spiritual weakness and a lot of headaches in our lives. The Man who sat by a well in a Samaritan village is still the only Source of living water. If we know him, we don’t ever need to be spiritually thirsty again.
My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1
