Women Watching The Wall Being Rebuilt

Read: Nehemiah 2:11-18; 6:15-16

Rhonda looked over the brochure for the security system just installed in her home. It had all the latest technology, with detectors for carbon monoxide, smoke, water leaks, dangerously low temperatures, and oh yes—burglars. With this company watching her home twenty-four hours a day from the monitoring center, she was bound to sleep better tonight. The top-of-the-line model had put a huge dent in her savings, but it seemed well worth the price.

The women in Jerusalem probably slept better after the wall around the city was rebuilt. The Jews who returned from Babylonian captivity had found a city in disarray, filled with rubble, the wall broken down, and the gates burned. The city stood defenseless. As some of the people joined to rebuild the solid stone wall, the women must have breathed a sigh of relief. They watched the progress as each day passed and looked forward to the day when the project would be completed. Once an unbroken wall enclosed Jerusalem again, the city would be able to defend itself if enemies attacked.

Sometimes we need to rebuild the walls around our lives. Disobeying God’s commands can cause our relationship with our Father and Protector to crumble. Ignoring him and pursuing our own desires leaves gaps in our protection that make us vulnerable to attacks from Satan, our number-one enemy. When this happens, we need to reconstruct our defenses by coming back under God’s authority and turning away from rebellion. Through consistent prayer, we can restore the walls around our lives that help us guard against temptation and guide us to make wise choices. A close relationship with God is the ultimate security system. It takes time and effort, but it’s well worth it.
