The Most Important Answer

Martha may not have understood the full meaning of Jesus’ comment that her brother would rise again, but she knew the right answer to his next question. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying” (John 11:25). When he asked Martha if she believed that, her response revealed her deep faith. Without hesitation, Martha affirmed that Jesus was the Son of God, the promised Messiah whom God had sent into the world.

Like Martha, each of us must answer the question that Jesus posed to his disciples in Luke 9: “Who do you say I am?” Our relationship with God and the eternal destiny of our souls depend on what we believe about Jesus’ identity. Was he simply a good, moral man who taught God’s ways to his followers? Was he deceiving people or himself when he claimed to be the Son of God? Or was he who he claimed to be—God in human form, who came to earth to die for our sins so that we could have a personal relationship with our Creator?

Once we know the answer to the all-important question, “Who do you say I am?” we have a rock-solid foundation for our lives. There will always be times when we don’t know what God is doing. We will always struggle with some aspects of the spiritual life and find some parts of the Bible hard to understand. But even when we’re confused or disappointed, we can hang on to what we do know—that Jesus Christ is Lord of our lives and that he is always trustworthy. When we face questions we can’t answer, it isn’t what but whom we know that counts.
