The High Price Of Disobedience

The High Price of Disobedience

Eve

Read: Genesis 3:14-19

She walked out of the lawyer’s office in a daze. As the bookkeeper for a charitable organization, she had received a paltry salary. She’d seen nothing wrong with supplementing it out of donations from businesses. It didn’t hurt anyone, since she took only small amounts. Besides, the center was doing fine, and no one else checked the records. As the years passed, she began to count on her “bonuses” as part of her income. Then one day she got a new supervisor, and suddenly she faced a choice of paying a large amount in restitution or spending time in prison.

Satan convinced Eve that there would be no consequences for disobeying God’s commandment, but she soon learned the terrible truth. That one moment changed her life forever: She would experience pain in childbearing, conflict in her relationship with Adam, and eventually death. More important, she lost intimate fellowship with her Creator. Instead of becoming like God, as Satan had promised, she became alienated from him. Eve’s choice also changed the world from a paradise to a hostile environment. Everyone who has lived since then has suffered from that first act of disobedience.

Today, Satan still uses the lie that we can break God’s commands without suffering any negative consequences, and we still fall for it. We may think that we’re getting away with something, but sooner or later we will pay the price for disobedience. All of God’s commands are based on his desire for our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Warnings against sexual impurity are to protect us from disease, heartache, and unhealthy relationships. Other commandments help us to live in a way that brings the greatest possible satisfaction and joy. When God forbids something, we can be sure that he has a reason and that there is a high cost for disobedience.

All your commands are trustworthy.
