Women Who Sang

Read: Judges 5:1-5; 1 Samuel 2:1-2; Luke 1:46-49

Twila hung up the phone and marked the date on her calendar. Although she had always avoided public speaking, she couldn’t turn down being a part of the dinner to honor Mr. Shelton. It was his generosity and business savvy that had put her family and others back on their feet after the factory closed. He had made it possible for Twila to fulfill her dream of going to college, and now he was helping her through medical school. After Twila’s dad died, Mr. Shelton had become her mentor, even walking her down the aisle at her wedding. Sure, she got nervous about giving a speech, but how could she pass up the opportunity to share how this kind man had made what seemed impossible happen?

The Bible contains three beautiful examples of women testifying to what God had done for them. After seeing God help Israel conquer a powerful army, Deborah praised him with a victory hymn. When God gave Hannah a son after years of barrenness, she poured out her gratitude in a poem. Mary’s awe at being chosen to give birth to the Messiah caused her to burst into song. Three different women in three different situations all experienced God’s mercy and goodness, and they all freely expressed their joy, wonder, and gratitude.

Each of us has a unique life story, and each of us can testify to God’s goodness and love. We may not be able to sing on key, write moving poetry, or sound like professional speakers, but God wants us to be ready to talk about him whenever we have the opportunity. There might be a relative, friend, coworker, neighbor, or stranger who needs to hear what God has done in our lives. Our one-of-a-kind story might be just what encourages that person to grow closer to God or to meet him for the first time. That’s worth testifying about!
