The Ideal Woman
Read: Proverbs 31:25
As we read through the description of the ideal woman in Proverbs 31, we may picture her as a solemn, serious person who is always intent on a project. She seems to be going in a dozen different directions and working day and night. Thank goodness for Proverbs 31:25, which tells us that she laughs. It’s good to know that although the ideal woman is industrious and hardworking, she makes time to relax and enjoy life. The verse also tells us why she laughs: She has no fear of the future. She knows that she has faithfully fulfilled her God-given roles to the best of her ability. Because she has done her part and the rest is in God’s hands, she can look toward the future with optimism.
The Bible emphasizes the importance of working hard, but it also recognizes our need for optimism and laughter. Modern scientific research has confirmed that a cheerful outlook is powerful medicine (see Proverbs 17:22). Laughter promotes healing, eases pain, lowers blood pressure, boosts immune-system functioning, relieves stress, and promotes a general sense of well-being. A sense of humor is important for our physical and emotional health, and it is an important asset in relationships.
With our busy schedules, it’s difficult to make time to relax, unwind, and simply laugh; and with today’s headlines, it may seem impossible to laugh “without fear of the future.” As Christians, we have more reason to laugh than anyone. Our past has been forgiven and God has promised us a glorious future. We are loved and protected by our Creator. When we do our best to fulfill our God-given roles, we can leave the rest in God’s hands. Trusting our lives to our heavenly Father leaves us free to enjoy his blessings, laughing and looking to the future without fear. That’s the ideal attitude.
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.
