Woman Searching For A Lost Coin

Read: Luke 15:8-10

I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. What a frustrating morning! Ever since breakfast I had been looking for my checkbook. My time hadn’t been a total waste, though. So far I had found the missing DVD remote, one of my granddaughter’s socks, my extra set of car keys, and a few other items I hadn’t seen in a while. Finally, I found the checkbook—it had fallen out of my purse onto the shoes in my closet. Now I could pay those bills. There was only one problem: Where in the world did I put my glasses?

Jesus told a parable about a woman who was searching for a piece of silver. Some people think that the silver was from the row of coins on the headdress that married women wore. Others point out that the coin was probably equal to a day’s wages at that time. Either way, the woman had lost something of great value and was desperate to find it. She lit a lamp, grabbed a broom, and swept every nook and cranny of her house. When she found the missing coin, the woman was overjoyed and invited her friends to celebrate with her.

The parable illustrates God’s rejoicing when people turn to him and repent of their sin. We can also take a cue from this story concerning our approach to God. Some people search for God in wrong places, such as the occult, man-made philosophies, or false religions. But God is not hiding from us. He has revealed himself through his creation; his Word; and his Son, Jesus. Once we become God’s children, we find guidance through his Spirit living in us and in the Bible. If we believe that God is worth searching for, he promises that we will find him.
