Read: 1 Samuel 30:1-18

As the police officer helped Crystal into the patrol car, she felt as if a week had passed instead of thirteen hours. Her ordeal had begun that morning when her estranged husband showed up at her office waving a gun. After ordering everyone out, he shut Crystal and himself in a workroom. Crystal had feared for her life as his moods swung back and forth from apologetic and remorseful to angry and threatening. Finally, when her husband had demanded food, an officer used the opportunity to overpower him. It’s really over! she realized, as she collapsed against the officer’s shoulder.

Abigail and Ahinoam, two of David’s wives, knew how it felt to be captured and rescued. When Amalekite forces raided their town, they were carried off with the rest of the women and children. As the miles passed by, the women’s hearts must have grown heavier as they wondered what the future held for them. One night, their captors feasted and danced to celebrate their plunder. Suddenly, David and four hundred of his men rushed upon the camp. The women’s hearts surely leaped for joy when they saw their rescuers coming to free them.

All of us have been captured, whether we know it or not. God created us to be in a relationship with him, but sin has distorted that perfect relationship and allowed Satan to have power over us. Satan desperately wants us to remain unaware of the rescue mission that God has carried out on our behalf. Jesus Christ died to set free those held captive in the grip of sin. When we believe in Jesus, God delivers us from Satan’s kingdom of darkness and transfers us to our rightful place, the Kingdom of Christ. When we read the story of our rescue in the Bible, our hearts should leap for joy.

He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.
