Ready for the Truth

Read: Joshua 2:1-11

“Mommy, why didn’t my birth mother want to keep me?”

Roberta looked down at her little girl’s brown eyes and wrinkled forehead. How should I answer this? she wondered. Maggie had always known that she had been adopted as a newborn, that God had chosen her as a special gift for a family with no children. But lately, she had been asking more probing questions.

“Let’s go out on the deck, sweetheart,” Roberta said. She knew that Maggie was ready to hear the truth.

Rahab was also ready to receive the truth. She had heard reports of how the God of Israel miraculously parted the Red Sea for his people, and how they later conquered two powerful Amorite kings. Perhaps she had mulled these stories over in her mind, filled with curiosity about the God who proved himself so much more powerful and merciful than the pagan gods of her Canaanite people. Then, amazingly, two men who worshiped Yahweh walked into her house. Along with the rest of her people, Rahab dreaded Israel’s inevitable attack on Jericho, but despite her fear, Rahab embraced the little that she knew about Yahweh and declared her belief in him as the one true God.

In all the evil, violent city of Jericho, God found only one person receptive to his truth. When he saw Rahab’s heart probing for him, he directed the spies to her house. Yahweh deals with people in the same way today. When he sees someone searching for him, he provides an opportunity for that person to connect with him. We don’t have to understand everything in the Bible to become God’s children; we just have to accept the truth that God sent Christ to die for our sin. As we grow spiritually, God reveals further truth to us as long as we are faithful to what we already understand. He will always send the truth that we are ready for.
