Huldah

Read: 2 Chronicles 34:14-22

I listened as the young woman behind the counter explained how this latest skin-care product would lift, firm, tighten, smooth, brighten, and otherwise transform my complexion. When I asked her what active ingredients the lotion contained, she didn’t know. I asked what made this product better than the miraculous discovery introduced by the same company several months before. She wasn’t sure. As we talked, I found out that the woman in the lab coat didn’t know much about basic skin care, much less about the products she sold.

Huldah had answers ready when she was asked about God’s Word. When workers found a scroll hidden away in the Temple, King Josiah sent the high priest and other representatives to seek out Huldah, a woman known for spiritual discernment. Although Huldah’s family members were keepers of the royal wardrobe, she gladly filled her prophetic role when the opportunity came. Huldah rejoiced in her heart that after many years Judah again had a king who desired to follow God. But she may have been surprised that the king inquired of her rather than one of the two male prophets, Jeremiah and Zephaniah. Undaunted, Huldah answered the men’s questions.

When we stand for something, we need to be prepared to answer questions. If we claim to be following God, other people should notice something different about us and our lifestyles. Sooner or later, someone will ask us about our beliefs. We don’t have to be theologians or Bible scholars for people to seek us out with faith questions. Even if our official job is keeper of the wardrobe, we should be able to answer questions about God in a way that sparks interest in him and in his Word.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
