Nothing To Go On
Nothing to Go On
Eve
Read: Genesis 4:1
Eve, the first woman in the world to have a baby, had no one to turn to for help. She had no mother or female relative to offer advice, no friends to lend a hand, no child-care book to answer her questions. Eve didn’t even have the memory of being a child herself. She had never experienced growing up or enjoying a relationship with a mother. Eve faced a lonely and terrifying experience as she dealt with childbirth and parenthood.
Eve must have struggled with anxiety and fear, as we all do, but today’s passage gives a clue as to how she managed this strange new situation. After Cain’s birth, she acknowledged that it had happened “with the LORD’s help.” Before being expelled from the Garden of Eden, Eve had enjoyed a unique relationship with her Creator, but sin had marred that intimacy. This new experience of motherhood pulled her into deeper dependence on God for wisdom, strength, and guidance. As the first mother, she had no one to turn to except her heavenly Father.
It can be terrifying to face a new situation and feel as if we have nothing to go on. Where do we turn when we lack the resources to deal with something for the first time, whether it’s a job, a relationship, or a tough decision? Other people can offer helpful information or encouragement, but God should be our primary source of guidance. Even in circumstances where we feel confident, God’s wisdom will be more trustworthy than our own. When we study God’s Word and ask for his help, he promises to guide us through any new experience, no matter how terrifying it seems.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
