Women Taught By Jesus

Read: Luke 8:1-3

I counted out twenty double-pocket file folders, making sure that I had an assortment of colors. Participating in the Helping Hands school-supplies drive gives me an opportunity to shop the back-to-school sales. I love soaking up the atmosphere in the stores—it brings back memories of getting my own children ready to return to school. The scent of the vinyl binders even takes me back to my own school days—the excitement of picking out just the right notebook and the anticipation of a new school year with a new teacher and new things to learn.

In Bible times, only boys went to school, while girls stayed at home to prepare for their domestic roles as wives and mothers. Women were not allowed to be taught by rabbis, who considered women unable to understand their teachings. Jesus shattered this convention by teaching women as well as men. The women who traveled with Jesus and ministered to him and the twelve disciples must have eagerly absorbed his every word, keenly aware of the privilege. They understood that to him, they were as important as the men, and as capable of learning.

When people believe in our ability to learn, we’re motivated to work hard and meet their expectations. God expects his children to be good students of his Word. Many passages in Scripture are difficult for us to understand, especially when Bible scholars disagree in their interpretations. But God has given us the “school supplies” we need. As we prayerfully study the Bible, rely on the Holy Spirit to show us its meaning, and obey what we’ve already learned, God will teach us everything we need to know to live a godly life. As lifelong students of God’s Word, we can always anticipate learning something new.
