Read: Judges 5:1-27

As her coworkers filed into the conference room, Angie shifted in her chair. I can’t wait to hear Bev’s presentation, she thought. Although Angie had worked for the marketing company for almost two years, she had never been involved with such a large account before. Her boss had adopted many of her ideas and allowed her to do all the research. Now all those late nights and extra hours on the weekends would be worth it. As the folders passed around the table, Angie opened hers and turned white. There was only one name written at the top of the report—that of her boss.

When Deborah ruled Israel, her leadership style was opposite to that of Angie’s boss. Deborah had played an instrumental role in the military victory against King Jabin. She had summoned the Israelite military commander, given him instructions, and accompanied him to the battlefield at his insistence. Yet in her victory song, Deborah didn’t claim any credit. She gave the glory to God and mentioned everyone who had had a part in the day’s success. She honored Israel’s leaders and those who volunteered for war, listing each tribe by name. She praised Jael and detailed her killing of the enemy army commander. Deborah downplayed her own part and referred to herself simply as “a mother for Israel.”

It’s only natural to want the credit that’s due to us, but when we concentrate on whether or not others are recognizing our efforts, we miss the opportunity to be used by God. When we let go of our desire for glory, we can encourage others and bring honor to him. Even if others don’t acknowledge our contributions, God sees them and will reward us. He’s looking for leaders and followers with humble spirits—and he will honor those who don’t honor themselves.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
