Go and Tell

Women At The Tomb

Read: Matthew 28:7

Melissa hung up the phone and laughed out loud. Such wonderful news! For six long years, her daughter and son-in-law had hoped to adopt a newborn. Now they had connected with a pregnant teenage girl who was trying to place her baby. Melissa beamed as she picked up the phone to call her friends, and then she froze. Maybe it was too early in the process to tell everyone. Maybe her daughter wanted to be the one to make the announcement. After all, Melissa didn’t have their permission to spread the news. Maybe this isn’t the right time to talk about it, she thought.

The women at the tomb didn’t have to ponder this question as Melissa did. Standing inside the empty tomb, they must have struggled to take in the meaning of it all. How long would they have stood there, frozen in place, as they stared at the burial cloths where Jesus’ body had been placed? The angel spoke again, jolting them back to the present moment. “Go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead,” he instructed them. The women had the most important message of all time to deliver—Jesus Christ was alive.

We all love to share news, especially when it’s something joyful. But when it comes to sharing the good news about Jesus, we hesitate and make excuses. We don’t want to force our beliefs on others, or invade their privacy, or offend them by being too pushy. But how can we even think of keeping the most wonderful news of all time to ourselves? God’s Word reminds us that we have the privilege and responsibility of sharing the gospel with others. To truly celebrate Easter, we need to make sure that we not only “come and see” but also “go and tell” that Jesus is alive.
