From Nobody to Somebody

Women Lifted Up From Obscurity

God delights in taking “nobodies” and transforming them into special “somebodies.” He took a young orphaned girl from a conquered race and made her the queen of the world’s most powerful monarch. Because of Esther’s faith in God and her humble obedience to her adoptive father, Mordecai, God used her to save the Jewish race from annihilation.

Rahab was a prostitute in a pagan city marked for judgment. When she trusted in the God of Israel, she saved the lives of herself and her family members and later became a prominent Israelite leader’s wife. Abigail was married to a man despised by others as a stupid, drunken fool. After risking her life to save her husband and others, she became the wife of the man who would become one of Israel’s greatest kings.

These women and others in the Bible rose from obscurity to take prominent roles in history. They didn’t reach a higher position in life because they chased after riches, fame, or popularity. God raised them up because of their humility and their willingness to follow his leading. Rather than seeking the spotlight for their own glory, they deliberately made honoring and obeying God their first priority.

Our society pushes a different formula for success than the one that God proposes. Books and classes teach us how to influence people, market ourselves, and move up in the world, but God says that to be great, we must seek him above all else. One day, when God judges all hearts and rewards those who serve him, many who appeared obscure and lowly on earth will be lifted up. For now, even if the world sees us as nobodies, when we do our best to follow God’s will, we can know that he is making us into very special somebodies.

He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.
