Eyewitness to a Miracle

Healing Blind Eyes

Read: Matthew 20:29-34

I once attended a church where the pastor’s wife had lost her sight a number of years before due to permanent tissue damage. The woman’s family adapted to her new condition but continued to ask God to restore her sight. One day during the woman’s usual prayer time, her sight suddenly returned. After examining her eyes, the doctors were baffled. The damage had not been corrected. Medically speaking, the woman should not be able to see.

We can picture a woman in the crowd following Jesus witnessing a similar miracle. She heard the two blind men desperately crying out for Jesus to have mercy on them. Her heart went out to the men, but the crowd yelled for them to be quiet. Blind beggars sitting by the road were a common sight, and the people wanted to hear this new Rabbi.

When the two men continued to shout louder, Jesus stopped. The woman couldn’t believe her ears when Jesus asked the men what they wanted him to do for them. Wasn’t that obvious? When the men told Jesus that they wanted to see, he touched their eyes. The woman gasped as the two men instantly jumped up and joined the crowd. One minute they were blind; the next, they could see.

In a sense, all of us are born blind, unable to see the spiritual world around us. When God opens our eyes to our sinful condition, we see the truth of Jesus’ death on our behalf. With the Holy Spirit living in us, spiritual truths and Bible passages that once were blurred become crystal clear. And there is always something new to see. God wants us to cry out for him to open our eyes, just as the two blind men did. We will never fully understand everything in God’s Word, but with his help we will always see wonderful things there.

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
