An Amazing Picnic
Read: John 6:1-11
She shut the cabinet doors and leaned against the sink. Not much there to make dinner for a family. There was a time when she took food for granted—before she became the unemployed wife of a disabled husband. Public assistance helped, but it didn’t always last until the end of the month. The kids would be home soon. How she would love to have a healthy, filling snack ready! She answered the doorbell and stared at the five sacks of groceries on her porch. Looking through the bags for a note, she found a grocery-store certificate for fifty dollars, which she could barely read through her tears.
A woman present when the Bible event in John 6 took place was also surprised by unexpected food that suddenly appeared. All afternoon she had ignored the growling of her stomach—it was worth going hungry to hear this rabbi. He healed people’s diseases and taught like no one else. Now Jesus was thanking God for a little bread and fish. How could he be so cruel? Was he going to share a snack with a few of his disciples in front of this hungry crowd?
Later the woman rested on the grass, her mind as full as her stomach. She wasn’t sure how it had happened exactly, but Jesus kept giving pieces of food to the disciples, who kept giving them to the people, who kept on eating. Tears filled her eyes as she vowed, I will never forget this day as long as I live.
All of us are born with a hunger that only God can fill. We may try to satisfy our spiritual hunger with possessions, pleasure, knowledge, or other people, but we won’t be truly satisfied until we are in a close relationship with the One who created us. After God feeds us, we realize that we were starving and didn’t even know it.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
Psalm 63:5
