Defining Moment

Rebekah

Read: Genesis 24:50-61

Abraham and his servant had prayed for God’s guidance in finding a wife for Isaac, and God had obviously led the servant to Rebekah as the chosen woman. Her brother, Laban, had the authority to negotiate the marriage contract, and he had consented. The plan was not complete, however, until Rebekah answered the question posed by her family: “Are you willing to go with this man?”

This was a defining moment of Rebekah’s life—a decision that would determine her future. Was she willing to go with this stranger to a country she had never seen, to marry a man she had only heard about? Did she stop to think that if she left, she would probably never see her relatives again? Rebekah was not given time to ponder her decision, but she didn’t seem to need it. Although she didn’t know what lay ahead, Rebekah must have believed that this unexpected offer revealed God’s direction for her life.

Each of us faces a similar choice. God has made all the arrangements for us to become his children. He created us and sent a Savior to pay the price for our sins so that we can be free of our old nature. Although he has the right to control our lives, he leaves the choice to us as his Spirit poses the question: “Are you willing to go with this Man?”

Our decision will determine our future for all eternity. Are we willing to leave behind the world that we know and venture into unknown territory? Will we step out in faith and follow the leadership of a Man we’ve never seen? None of us knows how much time we have left to ponder our answer, but when we understand how much God loves us, we will answer firmly, as Rebekah did, “Yes, I will go.”
