Anxious Bridegroom
Anxious Bridegroom
Bride Of Christ
Read: Revelation 19:6-9
The young woman smoothed her gown as she waited for her entrance. The last several months had seemed like a countdown to this very day. Now she couldn’t believe that the moment had finally arrived. Questions darted through her mind. Does my hair look okay? Did the makeup cover my blemishes? Am I really ready for this? I wonder if he’s having any doubts right now. Suddenly she took her father’s arm and stepped through the doorway. She looked toward her groom and her anxieties vanished. In that moment, she saw a reflection of her beauty in his eyes and his intense longing to claim her as his own.
In the New Testament, believers are pictured as the bride of Jesus Christ, made pure and unblemished by his blood shed on the cross. The passage in Revelation paints the scene of the union between Christ and his bride. Everyone who has believed in the gospel will enter into a new relationship with God and enjoy an intimacy that was impossible before. This wedding feast will be the pinnacle of human history, the event that all creation has been groaning for (see Romans 8:22).
Understanding the sacrifice that Christ made to pay the price for our sin is enough to motivate us to live godly lives. Knowing that one day we will be claimed as Christ’s bride puts the temporary troubles of our earthly lives in perspective. Looking forward to our “wedding day” helps us to resist sin’s pull and to do everything we can to get our hearts ready for our groom. When that day comes, we’ll understand that our entire lives have been a countdown to that glorious event. And in that moment, we will see our beauty in his eyes and his intense longing to be with us for all eternity.
He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
