Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The Ideal Woman

Taylor heard a loud voice and glanced across the crowded room. Oh no! I was hoping she wouldn’t be here! She had to endure the woman’s conversation at work, but being around her at parties was too much. It wasn’t that her coworker had no good qualities; she’d be great company if she could just stop talking about herself so much. Every other word seemed to be I or me. Every story she told had an undercurrent of boasting, even when she talked about her problems. As Taylor crept toward the door, she heard a loud voice. “Yoo-hoo! Taylor, over here!”

The ideal woman in Proverbs 31 didn’t need to boast about her accomplishments. She didn’t plan and work diligently so that she could brag about her home, family, or business successes. She acted from a motivation to honor God and serve others. No one who observed her lifestyle could fail to recognize her godly character. She lived with the quiet confidence that whatever others thought of her, her actions spoke for themselves.

Sometimes we get caught up in other people’s opinions. If they don’t notice our abilities and accomplishments, we may feel the need to fill them in, especially if we have low self-esteem. An air of boasting can creep into our conversations without our noticing. It’s gratifying when others praise us, but we won’t feel it’s necessary if we remember that our actions speak for themselves. When we focus on honoring God and serving other people instead of seeking our own glory, our lifestyles will speak volumes to anyone who observes us. That’s the ideal praise.

Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.
