The Ideal Woman

When Sabrina opened the closet door, her eyes fell on a strange-looking contraption pushed toward the back. What in the world? she thought. Oh yeah—what a waste of money! For only four easy payments of $$1999 plus shipping and handling, this thing was supposed to flatten her tummy, trim her waistline, tighten her rear, and give her muscular legs—in only a few minutes a day. It hadn’t taken Sabrina long to realize that she had fallen for another worthless gimmick. “Not one of my smartest investments,” she said aloud.

The ideal woman described in Proverbs 31 invests her time and money wisely. She’s an excellent homemaker and a successful businesswoman. She buys and sells property. She uses her sewing skills to make extra clothing to sell to merchants. She invests part of her earnings in a vineyard and starts a side business. Whether she’s pursuing home- or business-related interests, this woman ensures that everything she does is profitable. Rather than carelessly waste her resources, she invests them wisely, always expecting and getting a return on her efforts.

We may not all work in the business world, but we make daily investments of our time, money, energy, and abilities. We can waste what God has given us if we get lazy or if a self-centered attitude leads us to pursue goals that have no lasting value. At the end of our lives, God expects us to show a profit in how we have handled the resources he gave us. Investing in God’s work means using everything we have to build relationships and create opportunities to share his love and forgiveness. That’s the ideal way to invest our lives.
