A Remarkable Inheritance

Job’s Daughters

Read: Job 42:12-15

My jaw dropped lower and lower as I stared at the document in my hands. The fact that my great-uncle had included me in his will didn’t really surprise me; after all, he was childless and had always been close to my family. What totally shocked me was the amount of my inheritance! We had no idea that the man was so rich! My mind raced with plans—my husband quitting his job, buying a new house, helping the kids out, traveling with my family. This money was going to change the way we lived. . . . Suddenly the phone rang—and I woke up.

Today’s Bible passage mentions another surprising inheritance, but this one wasn’t just a dream. After Job endured the devastating loss of his children and all that he owned, God blessed him in his later life. Ten more children were born to him, including three daughters, described as the fairest in the land. At a time when women didn’t normally receive an inheritance, Job included Jemimah, Keziah, and Keren-happuch in his will along with his sons. These women must have felt cherished, knowing that their father loved them enough to go against the social norm to provide generously for their future.

God’s daughters also have a remarkable inheritance. That a perfect God would someday share his home and riches with imperfect women is amazing, but when we become God’s adopted children through believing in Jesus, he promises us a future that is wonderful beyond anything we could ever dream of. The knowledge that we have a Father who loves us so much that he sent his Son to die to secure our future should make us feel special and cherished. And it should change the way we live right now.

We live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.
