A Divine Appointment

The Woman At The Well

Read: John 4:1-6

The Samaritan woman licked her parched lips as her worn-out sandals pounded the hard, dusty road. She paused to shift the weight of her water jar. She hated making this long trip to the well every day, but it had to be done. At least the other women in the village can draw their water in the cool of the day, she thought bitterly. She hated waiting until noon, when it was so hot, but she knew how the other women would treat her if she showed up when they did. What the woman didn’t know was that she was on her way to an appointment that had been scheduled by God.

When Jesus and his disciples left Judea to return to Galilee, he didn’t choose the normal route. The Jews had long hated the mixed-race Samaritans and their attempts to combine Judaism with elements of a pagan religion. Jewish travelers made a long detour to avoid Samaria, but love compelled Jesus to go straight through it. As his disciples set off to buy food in the village and Jesus sat down to wait, he had something more in mind than taking a rest. He knew that a woman with a heavy heart would soon come to the well—a woman who needed to talk with him so that her life could change forever.

Every day, our heavenly Father waits for us to come and talk with him. He wants to comfort us when we hurt, encourage us when we’re down, guide our decisions, and strengthen us for the trials and difficulties our day may bring. Unfortunately, with our busy lifestyles, it’s too easy to rush into the day without spending time with him. What an unbelievable privilege we pass up when we skip our daily divine appointment.
