What Jb Does Best

Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. Colossians 4:5-6

My friend James Brown—JB—of CBS Sports is one of the best examples of someone who is gracious in every opportunity and moment God gives him. He is remarkable with people. The reasons are too many to list, but two things stand out the first time you meet JB: his love of Christ overflows from his life to everyone he meets, and he is absolutely sincere and genuine in all his interactions, no matter who you are.

Another friend of mine, Charley Casserly—now a television analyst but previously a longtime NFL general manager—once said that JB may be the most gracious person he’s ever met in his life.

“I’ve been traveling for a long time and have met a lot of people,” Charley says, “but I don’t think that I’ve ever seen anyone treat every person they run across the way that JB does. Regardless of their position or what they can do for him.”

Of course, we should all strive to be like that. The way JB treats others everywhere—no matter who they are—flows out of his deeply held belief that every person is a special and sacred creation of God. When we start there, as JB does, we will treat people as Christ treats them and expects us to treat them as well.

JB fancies himself a car guy—he loves restoring old cars. When you talk with him about it, however, you realize that his passion isn’t just about the satisfaction of bringing a car back to its original splendor. He says that being around car people is invigorating because he’s the one who knows the least about cars. He enjoys the “regularness” of car people sharing their knowledge with him at car shows and just having a chance to hang out together over a shared love of old cars. He may be a TV personality and Harvard-educated, but he knows that every person has something to teach him.
