Well Done

The master said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!” Matthew 25:23

As the clock ticked down at the end of our Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears in February 2007, we hugged each other. It was such a spectacular moment for the Indianapolis Colts to finally finish a season the way we had hoped. All the details we had worked on for so many months, all the way back to the off-season conditioning in February 2006. All the meetings and game preparation, all the film the coaches watched for months up until just two days earlier. The rehabilitation of injuries for so many guys. Fighting through illnesses. On and on. All of it had culminated in this celebratory moment.

“Well done.” “Congratulations.” “You finished what we set out to do,” I told the players.

It was glorious. But it was only a fraction of what I anticipate we’ll see when we finish this life and participate in the ultimate celebration.

I anticipate a scene in heaven when God tells us, “Well done, my good and faithful servants. Well done.”

It was special to share that feeling of accomplishment with each other after the Super Bowl victory, but I can only imagine how spectacular it will be to hear those words from God!

But don’t get me wrong—His “well done” comes in large part through grace. I can never overcome my sin and have Him say “well done” on my merits alone. I can remain faithful and stay on course as best as I can, knowing that Christ will present me to His Father as “blameless” and “without a single fault” (Colossians 1:22; Jude 1:24). I will strive to show Christ’s love for me through my compassion for others and my faithfulness to Him, even though I know my attempts will always fall short.

But I will keep trying and will look forward to that glorious day—well done, indeed!
