True Prosperity

Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? James 2:5

You or someone you know may have heard it preached—a version of what seems like the prosperity gospel—that God provides material blessings to those He favors. I’ve even heard an occasional suggestion that maybe the poor are just not praying hard enough or their faith in God is not sure and strong enough.

Growing up, I watched my grandparents, who were tremendous people of faith, minister in small churches for many years. While they weren’t poor, they certainly were never wealthy. When I got to the NFL, I sometimes felt guilty about the money I made playing (and later coaching) a game. I don’t know anyone who did more work for God’s Kingdom than my grandfather. Why didn’t he make the money I made working in the NFL?

Some people of seemingly solid faith are remarkably wealthy, while others who seem to be the saints of God’s Kingdom are destitute.

Is it a function of the quality and depth of their faith?

I would say no. I believe it is a reminder that God doesn’t always bless us materially in proportion to our faith or our work for Him. We can’t question God’s sovereignty; we just have to appreciate that He doesn’t measure wealth the same way we do. Faith in God is not about stuff. Christ’s earthly life should tip us off. No castle, chariot, silk garments, or golden crowns. Just a robe and some sandals.

Stuff—that’s a society thing. It’s a measure of most everything in secular society—success, intelligence, image, power, and position.

On the other hand, faith is about a relationship with God. It’s about a relationship with Christ and thankfulness for what He did for us on the cross. Faith is about relying on the “Helper,” the Holy Spirit, to guide and direct us every day. Faith transcends “stuff” and opens doors to being used by God for His Kingdom purposes.
