Spiritual Giants

Spiritual Giants

Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

Whenever I read this verse, I think back to our locker room. We had some absolute physical specimens, guys who looked like they came to life out of a college anatomy textbook. They spent hours and hours in the weight room exercising, building strength and flexibility to be able to do their jobs better. They didn’t get to their position as some of the best athletes in the world by accident, but rather through exhausting physical training, strictly structured nutritional diets, and a generally careful approach to anything they put in their bodies.

If these guys had spent that kind of time and effort on their spiritual life, there would have been no spiritual body fat, and we would have had a locker room full of spiritual giants, not just physical ones. And think of what that would mean for our youth, who hold many sports figures up as role models. Not only would they aspire to properly condition their bodies to better play the games they choose to play, but it could help them develop their minds and hearts by encouraging them to grow in their faith—a discipline with eternal consequences.

The same is true with any follower of Christ. We need to become spiritual giants. It begins with a commitment to Bible reading, prayer, and joining a Christ-centered church as well as being accountable to at least one other trusted believer. We must also take care of the temples—our bodies—that God has given us. As more and more news comes to light concerning the harmful and illegal substances being used in professional sports to gain an edge to perform better, we need to make sure we and our children are kept safe. We should always watch what we put in our bodies—eating healthy food and drink and eliminating harmful or potentially harmful substances.
