Saved from the Rubble

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

Much like we would relentlessly pursue our own children through any challenge, God relentlessly pursues us even as we sometimes lead such hectic lives that we end up in our own rubble.

Our friend Mark Merrill told Nathan and me a story about a Turkish father’s very public display of love during an earthquake.

After the quake, as the news spread about the devastated areas, the father raced to the school where he knew his six-year-old son, Armand, was at the time of the disaster. When the father arrived at the school, the building was nothing but rubble. Immediately, the father began frantically digging.

He worked as quickly as he could, working his way down through the large pile of wreckage, cutting his hands on the shards of rock and brick as he dug. People tried to stop him, explaining that his efforts to save his son were futile.

“Join me or leave me alone,” the father replied. For forty-seven hours, he uttered the same response every time someone would try to get him to stop because they believed all was lost.

“Join me or leave me alone.”

Four days, hour after hour, a relentless pursuit of his child.

Finally, the father heard a small voice. “Daddy, is that you?” Beneath the pile of rubble that had been the schoolhouse, he had reached his son who was with his classmates. Armand was safe. When his father pulled the final bricks away to free all the children, Armand’s face was beaming. He said to his classmates, “Didn’t I tell you? I told you my daddy would come. I told you my daddy would come.”
