Pulling Together

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

We all have issues. We all have things that pull at us, tempt us, and distract us—constantly.

And if we are honest about it, we would have to admit that we usually allow ourselves to be pulled, tempted, and distracted by everything imaginable—often the wrong things—because we believe we’re able to handle it all. No problem. More than likely we insist, once again, on going it alone.

But God doesn’t ask us to walk alone. God specifically created us to be in relationship, relationship with Him and relationship with others. God is always bringing other people into our lives to walk with us, to help us do what He’s called us to do even better.

During my years of coaching, I saw relationship in action. I called it a team—a group of individuals with a stated mission and purpose and a commitment to accomplish that mission successfully. Team members would interact in the locker room, in the classroom, and on the practice field, preparing for game day. They depended on each other to help us achieve our goal of winning football games. But I also saw that along the way, things would pull at the team to distract it, luring the attention of some individuals away from the game plan. It was never anything particularly surprising: injuries, concerns over individual playing time, contract renegotiations, and off-the-field distractions that came with the territory.

Successful, high-performance teams are aware of individual team members and the distractions and temptations they might be facing. Individuals don’t have to walk alone on those teams—others come alongside them and keep them focused and encouraged.

Great teammates make for great teams.
