Precious Commodity

Precious Commodity

I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. . . . Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matthew 6:25-26

A few years ago, we had a terrible three-month stretch of homicides in Indianapolis, the city’s worst string of killings on record. Most of the suspects were young men, many of whom don’t understand the value of life. Maybe they see human beings as cosmic accidents and life as a series of random events. Maybe they don’t care about other people’s lives because no one has ever really cared about theirs. Maybe they believe everyone is out for himself because that’s what the people close to them have demonstrated. I don’t know their individual stories. But I do know that when a young man feels no one really cares about him and his life has no value, it’s easy for him not to care about anyone else. Then taking someone else’s life doesn’t seem like that big of a deal.

It bothers me that our society devalues life the way it does. It’s devalued in our video games, music, movies, and TV shows. Unless kids have people in their lives who teach them that life should be respected, nurtured, and protected, they may not get that message because it too rarely comes through their entertainment. The world has gone too far in its casual approach to human life. And that approach opposes what God says.

Think about what Jesus taught about the value of human life. God knows each of our needs and desires before we can even tell Him about them. He cares about every aspect of our day-to-day living. He shares our excitement and our grief, He’s with us in our ups and our downs, and He tells us we have no need to worry.

Whatever you’ve experienced in life—and whatever you’re experiencing today—you need to know that God cares about you in every circumstance. He highly values you and considers your life precious. It only makes sense to agree with Him.

Uncommon Key > Life is more precious than you think, and God cares more deeply than you can ever know. When you really believe that, it changes everything. Dispel your self-doubt and believe.
