Muscular Faith

Muscular Faith

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Hebrews 11:1

“Keep me safe while I’m asleep, okay?” my daughter Jade whispered. She hugged my neck and pulled me close as I bent down to give her a kiss and tuck her in.

“Of course I will, sweetheart,” I told her. And I meant it. I will always do everything in my power to keep my children completely safe. Any good parent would. But the truth is that we don’t have control over things that happen in this world. We have to live with a certain amount of trust in God and faith that He is watching over us.

That’s not as easy as it seems. We like to think we’re in control, even when we know deep down that we aren’t. We often try to manipulate the outcomes of our circumstances. We try to manage every variable of every situation. We find ways literally and figuratively to insure our possessions and lifestyles against loss. We seek as much control as we can get.

But we know there are dangers and risks in this world and that God is ultimately in control over all of them. So we give up our sense of control and choose to live by faith—not counting on our own plan but on His. We have no choice but to live by faith—we do it all the time. We believe gravity will bring us down every time we jump, or that the plane will fly from point A to point B, or that the traffic light will be a red signal to cross traffic when it lights up green for us. But God is even more worthy of our trust than these things. If we can put our faith in people and machines and natural laws we can’t see, we can certainly put our faith in Him.

Choose to trust God with every detail of your life and that of your family. You can’t insure against every kind of danger, but you can place your faith in the God who guides you through every situation in life, even the hard ones. Know that when God says He is watching over you, He isn’t just expressing His best intentions as a finite parent. He is the infinite Father who really does have control over every variable. And He wants you to live with the assurance that He is taking care of you all the time.
