Inner Reflection

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Romans 12:3

The bathroom mirror.

Reflective glass that’s there to help me see that my hair is combed, my tie is straight, my collar is adjusted, and to view the final look making sure that everything is the way it should be.

But as I have grown older and I hope a bit wiser, I have come to realize a mirror’s usefulness isn’t relegated to showing me whether or not I’m put together on the outside well enough to meet the world. Each morning as I peer into the mirror, I am able to meet myself anew. I am invited to take a long, honest, and introspective look at myself, face-to-face with who I am. To look within and honestly evaluate where I am in the journey toward becoming all that God created me to be.

I learned this as a young man in Pittsburgh, when I played for the Steelers. The veteran players viewed themselves as uniquely gifted. Not in an arrogant manner, but rather recognizing that they were special, but other players were too.

Too often our method of being humble is to drag ourselves down. This can’t be the right method—God says that we are uniquely made. Rather, we should be elevating ourselves and others.

From time to time, I need that deep look within to put things back into perspective, especially when the world wants to lift me up for accomplishments on the football field or drag me down for not accomplishing them. To bring myself back to a perspective of all that I am in Christ—not according to the world. I need it to remind myself that the world doesn’t define me. I am defined by my relationship with Jesus Christ.

I recommend it for you, too. An honest evaluation in front of a mirror will keep you from thinking too highly of yourself but will also remind you not to be too harsh and think too little of yourself. After all, you and I were created unique and in particular for such a time as this.

Uncommon Key > Every morning, when you stand in front of a mirror, don’t just look at the reflected face. Look within. A regular and honest self-examination has the potential of getting and keeping you on track to become all He created you to be.
