In the Business of Eureka Moments

Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” . . .Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed. John 20:1-2, 8

Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter, and John, “the one whom Jesus loved,” were in desperate need of something other than the final vision they carried of Jesus hanging on a cross and then laid dead in a stone-cold tomb.

All their hope was gone. They had watched three days earlier when Jesus was nailed to the cross and left to die, they had watched as His limp and lifeless body was taken down and laid in a tomb, and now they stood before an empty tomb and wondered where His body had been taken.

In their despair they had forgotten His promise that He would rise three days later.

In Mary’s mind, the one in whom she had put all her hope was dead and gone. It shattered her world and dashed her hopes, along with the others standing nearby. That’s what they thought; that’s how they felt.

And then John walked in and saw . . . and believed. It was his eureka moment.

I’ve seen that moment with children time and again when they are learning their multiplication tables. There’s always that early period when they are memorizing a set of number combinations, but everything is still foggy, still just a lot of numbers to remember.

Then you see the light go on, that moment of recognition when it makes sense—five times three is fifteen and always will be. That’s the kind of moment John had. That’s the kind of moment we all need to have. That’s the kind of moment our family members—our spouses and children—need to have.

A eureka moment with Jesus Christ—when a person realizes who He is and what His death on the cross means for him or her—clicks for different people at different times. Do you have someone you’ve been praying for? Have you been praying for your spouse or a child or a parent?

Don’t grow weary in praying for their salvation, even if it hasn’t clicked yet. Different people have that eureka moment with Christ at different times.
