Hidden Toxins

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. Hebrews 4:12-13

I know a few people who were among the thousands who have had houses built using drywall manufactured in China. They didn’t know it at the time the home was built and didn’t even know that was something they should be concerned about at first. For one family, their first inkling of a problem was when a large bulge appeared in a bathroom wall when the wall got wet. The family considered just patching it but instead had a contractor come out to inspect the situation. They wanted to make sure that the leak, if that’s what it was, hadn’t spread to other areas of the wall.

When the contractor cut into the wall to assess the problem, he discovered the damage was extensive.

Throughout the entire bathroom.

Throughout the entire house.

It seems this particular drywall manufactured in China absorbed water and would begin to expand, producing toxic fumes. Ultimately those folks had to tear the house down to the foundation, as well as destroy all of their furniture and almost everything else that had been in the house. What was lurking inside the walls had poisoned nearly every aspect of their home and lives.

Sin can do the same thing in our lives. We can cover and paint over issues, or patch them temporarily, but often they will fester under the surface and grow so large and toxic that they begin to affect other areas of our lives and ultimately threaten our very foundation.

Staying rooted in God’s Word can help us avoid insidious and deadly issues in our lives. The Bible helps us to see beyond what’s on the outside to what is in our hearts, to question our motivations, and to cleanse us from those things we try to keep hidden.
