Give and Receive Blessings

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!” Malachi 3:10

Jesus made it very clear when He was tempted by Satan that we should not put the Lord to the test (see Luke 4:12, in which Jesus cites Deuteronomy 6:16). However, we are actually called to do that when it comes to our tithe.

Many people wait to give to God until they’re done taking care of everything else that month . . . of course, we all know how that goes.

Instead, we should give to God first and let Him prove Himself. I have done that for as long as I can remember, and He’s been faithful, whether I was making a salary of $20,000 as a rookie player or at the end of my career when I was making much more as a head coach.

The truth is that it’s not really “giving to God” but rather using what He has given us. After all, everything we have belongs to Him. Therefore, we have a stewardship responsibility to make sure it’s accounted for.

Tithing is not about a percentage but about a principle. God will take what we bring to Him and multiply it for the good of others. And He will continue to provide for our needs as well.

How are you using what God gave you? It may be a tithe of time, talents, or treasure. How can you help those whom God has brought across your path? What about that single-mother waitress struggling to care for and feed her children? Does a coworker going through a divorce need an encouraging word? What about that neighbor who can’t pay the electric bill this month and is in jeopardy of having the power turned off?

There are so many ways to tithe from the gifts that God has given us, and when we do, He will pour out blessings upon us. Not blessings in terms of more “stuff,” but blessings so that we can continue to bless others.
