Essential Nourishment
Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35
Since I retired from coaching in 2009, I am home a lot more now. One of the things I’ve been able to do more often is eat breakfast with the kids. In fact, I’m often the cook while Lauren is getting them dressed. Because I don’t have to rush out to work, I usually try to fix them what they ask for, even if it requires some effort. Cereal for Justin, oatmeal for Jade, eggs for Jordan. But Lauren and I don’t just want to dress and feed them. We want to share with them those things that will shape the foundations for their future . . . the bread of life through Christ, the importance of character, and so on.
Everything you accumulate in this life will wear out, be destroyed, or fade into insignificance as you go through the seasons of your life. You’ll not find the life God intended for you in relationships seeking immediate and personal gratification—even the youngest have learned that the grass is not always greener. You’ll not find it by trying to recover what you think you lost or what you believe you were shortchanged on when you were younger.
But you will find the answer in the circle of loved ones and friends in your lives. You will find it and feel it in the warmth of the hand holding yours, the person who cares that you are there. You will find it when you sit with wise and experienced loved ones and ask questions about the important things in life, about what and where you should spend the time you have been given, and about where will you find the true value in life that should be embraced each day.
And you will find it in a relationship with the one who said and continues to say, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Jesus Christ is your spiritual sustenance—the essential element needed for your spiritual well-being for the rest of your life.
Uncommon Key > Take a moment and “break bread” with Jesus right now, thanking Him for providing spiritual nourishment to you.
